Garbage and recycling
The bins are located behind the front steps. Collection day is Tuesday, so the bins need to go down to the street on Monday night. Once the trash has been picked up, the bins need to be brought back up from the street. Please don’t let Kate try and do this!!!
What goes in each bin? See this City of Berkeley page (scroll down to “Sort waste into appropriate carts”)
Washing clothes
Washer: Use unscented laundry detergent only (allergies in the house), and use about 1/4 cup. The cycle takes a long time but cleans clothes well using cold water.
Important—The water flushes out through a pipe to the left of the washer. If it pops out, water shoots all over the floor. So if you see that, or any water on the floor, please stop the machine and let Kate and Jessica or Andrew know.
Dryer: Please clean the lint filter before using. Don’t push the dryer closer to the wall—the vent needs space to function pushing air to the outside.
Bicycles
Berkeley is notorious for bicycle theft. Please make sure that your bike is both locked and hidden from view.
Buses
The bus runs on weekdays only. Refer to the AC Transit schedule (note that the bus arrives at Vine Lane about 5-7 minutes after leaving Euclid & Grizzly).
History of the house and area
The house was built in 1926, a few years after the 1923 Berkeley Fire destroyed much of Northside. Our family purchased it in the early 1960s.
Crime and safety
You live in the safest corner of Berkeley: crime is worse either farther west (toward the bay) or south (the other side of the campus). But use common sense, lock your bike, be aware of your surroundings. There are thieves around town, and they love iPhones, bikes, and laptops.
