The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeleypaths.org\/\">Berkeley Path Wanderers Association<\/a> publishes a great map of all the little hidden walkways, but here are some suggestions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up to the park and back<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Walk a few hundred meters north to the Rose Garden and Codornices park<\/li>\n<li>Explore the paths in the park<\/li>\n<li>Walk back home. Easy!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>A short circle<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go a few steps south and then walk UP Hawthorne Terrace one block<\/li>\n<li>Continue up the stairs (&#8220;La Loma Steps&#8221;) up another block to Buena Vista<\/li>\n<li>Walk uphill a few more meters and turn left onto Greenwood Terrace.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Halfway along the block you will find <strong>Greenwood Common<\/strong> behind a gate. It&#8217;s private property, but they don&#8217;t mind polite and quiet visitors: go in, walk to the end of the common and admire the view.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Return and continue along Greenwood Terrace to Rose Street, head back downhill (don&#8217;t follow the curve left onto LeRoy) and continue down <strong>Rose Walk<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>When you reach Euclid, turn left and you&#8217;ll be back home in a few steps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>A bigger circle<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go north a few hundred meters to Codornices park<\/li>\n<li>Go to the back left corner of the park, past the baby play area to where a bridge crosses the creek<\/li>\n<li>There are some concrete stairs that go up from this point into the hills<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Did you notice these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeleypaths.org\/JAlbumPathPhotos\/slides\/100-Tamalpais%20Path-2.JPG\">stairs by the bridge<\/a> when you were wandering around the park in the first walk? Here&#8217;s where they go&#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Go up these stairs &#8212; there are maybe 100 or so &#8212; and you come out on Tamalpais Rd.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><em>You can either turn either right (downhill) to shorten the walk a bit, or turn left (uphill). Assuming you chose uphill:<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Follow Tamalpais up the hill a few hundred meters and then turn right to go downhill on Shasta Ave.<\/li>\n<li>Follow Shasta back down the hill: there are some beautiful homes and canyons here.<\/li>\n<li>You will join Tamalpais (this is where get to if you turned right in the choice above) just next to Rose St.<\/li>\n<li>Follow Rose and Rose Walk down to Euclid and home, just like the end of the smaller circle walk.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>For the foodies<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cross Euclid and walk 50m south (left) to find the top of Vine Lane. This path becomes Vine Street and takes you to the heart of the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gourmetghetto.org\/\">Gourmet Ghetto<\/a>&#8221; with some great eating and shopping options. (Some highlights: the farmer&#8217;s market each Thursday; the Cheese Board Collective.) It&#8217;s just a half mile down the hill, but then it&#8217;s a half mile back up!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other walking possibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We love our neighborhood! There are so many options for walking around that we can&#8217;t list them all. But here are a few other ideas.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Try going up Buena Vista past Hillside School, past Maybeck Twin Drive, and past the <a href=\"http:\/\/berkeleyheritage.com\/berkeley_landmarks\/temple_of_wings.html\">Temple of the Wings<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dupontcastle.com\/castles\/hume.htm\">Hume Castle<\/a>. For an alternate walk down to the Gourmet Ghetto, go down Hawthorne Terrace about 50m, to find and descend Hawthorne Steps.<\/li>\n<li>Just north of the campus on Spruce are the charming <a href=\"http:\/\/berkeleyheritage.com\/berkeley_landmarks\/thornburg.html\">Normandy Apartments<\/a>; the Seminaries and churches on &#8220;Holy Hill&#8221; at Ridge and LeConte are nice, and right on the way if you&#8217;re walking to Tolman hall or that part of the campus.<\/li>\n<li>Try walking to the top of campus by going UP Hawthorne, turning right on LeRoy and following it all the way to Cedar, then on to campus along LeRoy and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeleypaths.org\/JAlbumPathPhotos\/slides\/112-LeRoy%20Steps-1.html\">LeRoy steps<\/a>, or else up Cedar to La Loma and thence down La Loma to the top corner of campus at <a href=\"http:\/\/berkeleyheritage.com\/berkeley_landmarks\/founders_rock.html\">Founders&#8217; Rock<\/a>. If you&#8217;re walking to campus, keep trying new routes!<\/li>\n<li>On the weekends only, the 67 bus runs through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylines.net\/img\/Desktops\/big\/Wildcat_Creek_Tilden_Park.jpg\">Tilden Park<\/a>. There are miles and miles of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebparks.org\/Assets\/_Nav_Categories\/Parks\/Maps\/Tilden+map+north.pdf\">hiking trails<\/a> there, as well as a swimming lake, barbecues, and a restored carousel. Just\u00a0 walk a few blocks down to Spruce and catch the 67 up the hill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are lots of places to walk around here.
